Causes of Bad Breath (Halitosis) and How to Treat It

Bad breath, which negatively affects social life, originates from inside the mouth in 90% of cases. The most common cause is inadequate oral hygiene; not using dental floss and not cleaning the tongue in addition to brushing allows bacteria to accumulate and cause odor. Decayed teeth, old ill-fitting bridges, and gum diseases are also major causes of odor.

To prevent bad breath:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and definitely use a tongue cleaner.
  • Clean between teeth with dental floss or an interdental brush.
  • Prevent dry mouth by drinking plenty of water.
  • If you have cavities, be sure to get them treated.
