How to Establish Tooth Brushing Habits in Children

Tooth brushing habits in children should start with the eruption of the first tooth (approximately the 6th month). Initially, parents can wipe the teeth with a clean damp cloth. As the child grows (2-3 years old), brushing with pea-sized toothpaste should be turned into a game.

Tips:

  • Be a role model for your child; brush your teeth together.
  • Choose brushes in their favorite colors and with cartoon characters.
  • Play a favorite song (lasting 2 minutes) during brushing.
  • Reward them by sticking stars/stickers on a calendar for the days they brush.
